Port Blair, Oct. 19: It has been experienced in the past that on the occasions of Durga Pooja Festival which is celebrated in these Islands with great enthusiasm by public for many days a large number of devotees and spectators come-out on roads and visit various Pooja Pandals. Due to heavy rush everywhere in the Port Blair City and adjoining areas, roads are overcrowded with pedestrians and vehicles. As such the chances of accidents increase.

It has therefore been decided by the A&N Police to launch a special joint drive by the Traffic and local police against dangerous driving, drunken driving, not wearing helmets, etc. during the Durga Pooja Festival period 21.10.12 to 24.10.12 all over the Islands.

All parents of teen agers are advised not to allow their children to ride Motor cycles without helmets and a valid licence. Anyone found driving under intoxication, without a helmet, without a licence will have stern action initiated against him under the provisions of Motor Vehicles Act 1988, apart from a recommendation to the licensing authority Andaman and Nicobar Islands to suspend his driving licence.

All the traffic and local police teams deployed for checking are now equipped with modern analyzer machines.
