Port Blair, Nov. 9: Acting on information furnished by the Special Branch CID, the staff of the CID Unit apprehended three persons for their efforts in selling of elephant tusks at Attam Pahad.

On 08/11/12, on receipt of credible information about the trading of two Elephant tusks by some people, a special team comprising of S.I Mohd. Sameer, I/C PS CCS, HC K. R Murgeshan, HC K. Venkateshwar Rao, PC Ashiq Iqbal and PC Uday Kumaran of PS CCS and S.I Sanjay Kumar & HC Sasi Kumar of Special Branch CID conducted successful raids at Dolly Gunj, near ITI gate.

In the first raid a car bearing Reg. No. AN 01 E 7954 was stopped and one elephant tusk was recovered from the possession of Mr. Nripen Chaki R/o Bhatubasti. On interrogation, Mr. Nripen Chaki disclosed about the second tusk kept in another vehicle and on being called, another car bearing Reg. NO. AN 01 C 2699 reached at the spot. Immediately, the police party stopped the second car and recovered another tusk from the possession of two persons namely Mr. Mahesh Sharma R/o Sajeevan Coloney (Haddo) and Mr. Ashit Baran Dutta R/o Sita Nagar (Dollygunj).

They failed to produce any license/permit/ declaration for possession/trading/transportation of elephant tusk, as such both elephant tusks along with both cars were seized u/s 50/51 Wild Life Protection Act, 1972 under cover of a seizure memo at 1230 hrs and all the above persons were detained for committing offence under wild life protection act. Further, the report of Zoological Survey of India, Haddo has also confirmed the seized property is elephant tusk – protected under Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
