Port Blair, Nov. 6: The Lt. Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM accompanied by the Chief Secretary, State Heritage Committee members and senior officers of the Administration today visited old Rural Development & Panchayat office building, Marine Hill and old JNRM hostel, South Point, the two buildings recommended for demolition. The Lt Governor after inspection directed the Chief Engineer, APWD for undertaking assessment of the old RD & Panchayat building with a view to restoring it as a heritage building. For the old JNRM hostel building, he directed APWD for using the materials of the existing building for economic construction of the new building.  

The Lt Governor also directed that the State Heritage Committee to identify all the old buildings with historical background on priority for the purpose of declaring them as heritage buildings and for their proper restoration. He also directed for early finalization of the historical sites for their preservation and restoration.
