Port Blair, Oct. 16: The Greeno Eco Club of Government Senior Secondary School, Sabari, Middle Andaman observed “Global Hand washing Day 2012” on 15th October 2012. Various programmes were conducted to observe the day in a meaningful manner.

A hand wash program was organized for all the students of the school on the occasion. Students were sensitized about the importance of washing hands before taking food, after going to the washroom etc. Simple act of washing hands with soap at critical times during the day, for instance before eating and after defecation could potentially prevent these infections. Hand washing with soap is one of the most effective and low cost ways to prevent diseases like diarrhoea and pneumonia, explained the Principal of the school in his address on the occasion.

The programme aimed to drive behavioural changes within school children so that they became agents of change and also help in taking the message home. The challenge is to transform hand washing with soap from an abstract good idea into an automatic behaviour performed in homes, schools, and communities worldwide, and this was precisely the key objective of observing Global Hand washing Day at the school.
