Port Blair, May 20: The PCC President,Kuldeep Rai Sharma, PCC President in a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor, A & N Islands invited his attention towards the problems being faced by the islanders particularly the patients and students while visiting Chennai, Kolkata and New Delhi for various purposes due to non availability of accommodation in Administration’s Guest Houses / Bhawans in these cities.
In his letter the PCC President pointed out that the Andaman & Nicobar Administration, for the benefit of Islanders, general public, students and Govt. Officials visiting, New Delhi, Chennai & Kolkata for medical treatment, admission of their children for higher studies and various other purpose, have constructed Andaman Nicobar Bhawans in all these cities / places long back. With the passage of time, the number of islanders & Govt. officials visiting mainland for medical treatment and other purposes has increased manifold but the number of rooms in these Bhawans remained unchanged. Consequently there is excessive demand of accommodation in all these Guest Houses / Bhawans owned by the A & N administration throughout the year.
Kuldeep said that the people of these islands visiting Chennai, Kolkata and New Delhi mainly for medical treatment, admission of their children for higher studies and other purposes are mostly of poor financial background and unable to afford the exorbitant rent of accommodation prevailing in these cities.
Kuldeep requested the Lt. Governor, A & N Islands to look into the matter and initiate appropriate action for increasing accommodation / rooms in these Guest Houses / Bhawans considering the difficulties being faced by the underprivileged people of these islands visiting these cities. The PCC President further opined that, as an interim measure possibility can be explored to hire accommodation/apartments on lease rent basis till such time the augmentation of the capacity is done by the administration by constructing additional accommodation.
