Port Blair, Dec. 19: Acting on information furnished by the Special Branch CID, the staff of the CID Unit has apprehended two persons who were trying to sell elephant tusks, at the entrance of link road connecting Foreshore Road to Megapode.

On 17th Dec. 2012 on receipt of credible information about the trading of four Elephant tusks, a special team comprising of S.I. M.K. Kumar, Jerome Peter, Sameer Ahmed, Sumit Kumar Nag and S.I Sanjay Kumar & Sasi Kumar of Special Branch CID conducted successful raid at the entry point of link Road connecting Foreshore Road to Megapode Nest.

In the raid a car bearing Reg. No. AN 01 F 5220 was checked and four pieces of elephant tusks were recovered from the possession of Mr. Mani Shanker Bairagi, & Mr. Shyamal Das. They failed to produce any license/ permit/ declaration for possession/ trading/ transportation of elephant tusk, as such all four pieces of elephant tusks along with car bearing Reg. No. AN o1 F 5220 were seized u/s 50/51 Wild Life Protection Act, 1972. All the above persons were detained for committing offence under Wild Life Protection Act 1972.

Further, the tusks were sent to Zoological survey of India for confirmation. Zoological Survey of India has confirmed that the seized property alongwith detained persons were hand over to forest officials for further action.
