Port Blair, Nov. 12: The special task force of South Andaman District constituted to curb menace of Ganja has succeeded in making arrest of one notorious drug peddler Shiekh Murtaza in NDPS case. Illegal Ganja weighing 1.510 Kg has also been recovered from his possession.

On 10/11/2018, a credible information from CID Branch was received that one person namely Sheikh Murtaza is in possession of huge quantity of illicit Ganja. Immediately the special task force comprising SI Surjit Bhattacharjee, HC/899 Regan Wagh, PC/2105 M. Ashok Kumar, PC/1047 Jayanta Kumar Biswas, PC/1019 Manoj Kumar Yadav, PC/2629 S. Nanak Singh, PC/1052 K. Hamza (CID staff) and PC/1562 Samir Kerketta (CID Staff) led by Insp. Arun Kumar Singh along with DySP (SA) Shri Nishant Gupta was activated. The decoy customer from the team had struck the deal with Shiekh Murtaza to deliver the illicit Ganja near a hotel at Sea Shore Road. As per the plan the team raided the spot where the illicit Ganja was to be handed over. He was found in possession of 1.510 Kg of apparently Ganja type substance. He was arrested under section 20(b)(ii)(B) NDPS Act, 1985 in FIR No. 620/18 at police station Aberdeen. He was produced before the concerned court which remanded him for judicial custody. The punishment for the said offence is imprisonment up to 10 years and fine up to Rs. one lakh.

The accused person is a notorious history sheeter of PS Aberdeen and had committed various offences including theft, burglary, assault on public servant and attempt to murder. His previous involvements in PS Aberdeen are:

During interrogation the accused revealed that he had been procuring the illicit Ganja from Kolkata via sea route.

The entire operation took place under the direction of Insp. A. K. Singh, SHO PS Aberdeen under overall supervision of SDPO (SA) Shri Nishant Gupta.

In this recent past, police has also intensified checking on illegal supply of liquor. In the effort, a total of 28 cases have been registered and arrested 28 persons in the past 15 days under section 32 Regulation Act 1876 from various localities like Mohanpura, Junglighat, Nayagaon etc.

The police team of South Andaman District is committed to eradicate the menace of illicit sale of narcotic drugs like Ganja.
