Port Blair, Jan 18: Vadodara Local Centre of The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI), is organizing National Level Seminar on “Issues & Challenges in Technical Education” at Vadodara, Gujarat under the aegis of IEI, during 23 to 24 March, 2019.

Technical education plays an important role in economic development of the country as it is linked with training, skills, job creation and employment. In terms of number of institutions, India has the largest higher education Institutes in the world and has second largest number of students.  In next few decades, India will have world's largest set of young people. The youth population can be a great asset to a country but majority of students passing out from our universities do not have employability skills. The present technical education system does not serve the purpose for which it has been intended. In view of increasing quantity of technical institutes, their quality has declined.

So there is an urgent need to remove the drawbacks of higher technical education system and make it worthwhile so that all concerned are benefited from it. To sustain in the global competitive market and to become a prosperous country in a global economy, India has to qualitatively strengthen technical education.  Despite significant progress made in our education system, the challenges and issues faced by technical institutes are found to be very crucial. Issues such as  declining research quality standards, privatization,  inadequate staff and infrastructural facilities, lack of adequate qualification of teaching staff, outdated teaching methods, low enrolment rate, outdated curriculum, students drop-out, gender bias persisting  in technical institutes are integrally related with technical education.  The challenges faced by technical institutes are continuous up- gradation of syllabus, supply demand gap,  uneven growth of technical institute and access to job opportunity for pass out students , scarcity of fund to meet demand of various technical Programs which have great impact on technical institutes. Therefore, an attempt will be made in this seminar to discuss various issues, challenges related with technical education and to arrive at a reasonable solution of issues and challenges in technical education in India.
