Port Blair, Jan 21: The Directorate of Disaster Management conducted a Workshop-cum-Training under Disaster Management in Higher Education programme (DMHE) in the Auditorium of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Dollygunj, Port Blair on 19th January 2019 to train the Students of DBRAIT with endeavour to build a culture of disaster safety and capacity building in youth of A&N Islands. The programme creates the need for a different set of roles and responsibilities for students during an emergency event and will equip with skills and capabilities to carry out various mitigations, preparedness, preventive, response and recovery activities in pre, during and post disaster period. DMHE is one of the best programme for creating disaster preparedness in Higher Education.

On this occasion, Shri Govind Ram, Director (DM) highlighted the significance of disaster management and its importance due to various risks of these vulnerable islands. He emphasized on Disaster Preparedness, Prevention and Mitigation of each corner of the society/community so that the losses of lives and properties will be minimized. He also urged the participants to learn the intricacies of Disaster Management through the one day training workshop under DMHE and participate in all activities carryout by the college/institution for disaster preparedness.

Shri T.K.S. Ajayan, Asst. Director (Ops.), DDM enlightened the students about vulnerability profile of A&N Islands and also explained the functions of State Emergency Operation Centre and Emergency Operation Centres (EOCs) of various Islands and its emergency communication system which covers all A&N Islands to disseminate alerts and warnings in any emergency.  

While welcoming the gathering Shri Gyan Singh, Asst. Director (Log.), DDM briefed about the DMHE programme and its importance for Colleges/Institution which helps to prepare College/Institute Disaster Management plan and response mechanism to tackle any catastrophe by the college/Institute itself.

Shri Deen Mohammed, Safety Office, DDM elaborated about preparation of Disaster Management Kit in home/individuals which helps to survive during disaster situations and also briefed the emergency and toll free contacts of SEOC and EOCs.

Dr. Vazeem Iqbal, Consultant, DDM briefed all contents which required to be inclusion in College/Institutions Disaster Management Plan alongwith roles and responsibility of each responsible officer and task forces to be constituted in the college/institute to respond any disaster.      

The NDRF Team headed by Shri Vikash, Team Commander, NDRF which is a specialized force to respond all kinds of disasters in India, exhibited their skills with great alacrity beginning from MFR, First Aid, CPR, CSSR and SAR techniques were very handy. Apart from choking, swallowing of any foreign substance and consecutively removal of those particles explained in detail with demonstrations.   

Shri Janik Ram, Assistant Director (Amdn.), DDM, conveyed gratitude to the Principal, Faculties, Staff and Students for their relentless support for organising this successful Training-cum-Workshop in their college/Institute. The programme was ended with vote of thanks proposed by Shri Altamash Mustafa, Asst. Professor, DBRAIT.
