Port Blair, June 24: Naval Ship Repair Yard (NSRY), Port Blair, the largest industrial establishment of the Andaman & Nicobar Command has been selected for the award of prestigious Chief of the Naval Staff Trophy for Best HRD practices among minor units of the Indian Navy.

The rolling trophy is annually awarded for naval industrial establishments that are predominantly manned by Defence Civilian personnel for being adjudged as the best in the field of Human Resource Development including Organizational Clarity, Competency Building, Industrial Relations, Training, Job Rotation, Environment, Service to Underprivileged Sections of the Society, Social Issues, Health Awareness, Development & Motivation and Quality of Work Environment etc.

NSRY, Port Blair, the smallest of the three NSRYs of the Indian Navy takes pride in rendering maintenance support to the largest flotilla of the Navy comprising 17 ships.  The Yard’s workforce is one of the finest and is highly productive. The personnel of the Yard are multi-skilled and perform functions across various trades. The administration of NSRY under the Commodore Superintendent and Andaman & Nicobar Command takes note of significant contribution of personnel of the Yard and encourages them in all their endeavours through various HR programmes.

NSRY contributes significantly to the economy of the Islands by outsourcing large volume of ship repair activities to the local trade.  Even if the mainland firms participate in the bidding process, the Yard makes it mandatory for them to employ more than a specific percentage of personnel from the Islands.

In an initiative to enhance employability of ITI trained local youth, NSRY and ANC launched a programme to depute selected candidates to Dockyard Apprentice Schools (DAS) in the mainland, as a result of which three qualified ITI holders from the Islands are presently undergoing training at DAS Karwar and Visakhapatnam.

To provide practical orientation by hands on exposure and motivation to students, under the ‘Knowledge Sharing’ programme, visit by about 900 students from local schools, ITI, Polytechnic and Engineering College was organised by the Yard during the last one year. The Yard also conducts large number of environmental progrrammes, beach cleanup drives and visits to local orphanages as part of fulfilling the Yard’s social commitment and also to do their bit in preserving the pristine beaches of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
