Port Blair, June 28: On the occasion of ‘World Hydrography Day’ on 21st Jun 13, the only hydrographic survey ship of the Andaman & Nicobar Command, INS Investigator hosted a variety of activities to showcase survey related functions of the ship through a movie on hydrography and an exhibition of survey equipment and practices. The ship was open to the families and children from various schools.

The addition of INS Investigator will enable the upgradation of navigational charts of the area thereby rendering great help to the vessels at sea in conduct of safe navigation. The ship has its integral helicopter for enhanced reach for its operations.

The International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) boasts of 80 countries as its members including India. The Indian Navy with nine sea going hydrographic survey vessels is one of the premier contributors for conduct of hydrographic surveys for navigational safety at sea with area of responsibility spanning from the Persian Gulf, East Coast of Africa to the Straits of Malacca. To commemorate the efforts put in by hydrographers to chart waters the world over 'World Hydrography Day' is celebrated every year on 21 Jun. The theme for the year 2013 promulgated by the IHO is "Hydrography-Underpinning the Blue Economy".
