Port Blair, Oct. 10: Four officials of Port Blair Municipal Council were arrested by the Anti Corruption Department, of A&N Police based on a complaint of corruption received. The arrest was made on 9th Oct. 2013 at evening hours U/s 13(1)d/13(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 read with Sec. 420/120B of IPC.

According to reports, the four arrested were Maheshwar Rao, Executive Engineer, Zaki Ahmed, Assistant Engineer, Sunder Rao, Accountant and Bobby Gomez Account Officer who were later released on bail today.

Sources inform that the arrest was made after the Anti Corruption team was able to establish the charges framed against the officials on purchase of electrical items at exorbitant rates. The electrical items were purchased at the rate of Rs. 14 Lakhs corresponding to the annual approved rates of the year 2012-13 ignoring the accepted rates for the year 2013-14, which would otherwise have cost approximately Rs. 8 Lakhs to the Council.

Under Prevention of Corruption Act 1988, this is one of the rarest case where the arrested have been granted bail within 24 hours of the arrest. It is learnt that the Anti Corruption department headed by Ms. Aslam Khan, IPS, Superintendent of Police is under immense pressure from various corners, for having poked the PBMC den.
