Port Blair, Oct. 10: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM has given his approval for establishment of milk supply chain from Diglipur to Port Blair to ensure availability of cow milk to the common people at home.  The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) through ANIIDCO would be procuring milk chilling equipment, road milk tanker/refrigerator van etc.

The project which aims at benefiting both the producers and the consumers of milk, will also provide the marketing facility for the farmers of N&M Andaman District by collecting milk from their door steps and making the same available to the consumers of both North Andaman and South Andaman. It is estimated that approximately, 1564 litres per day of surplus milk is available at Diglipur and other nearby villages of North & Middle Andaman. At present, there is no organized milk collection and distribution system. The procured milk will be brought to Port Blair through a refrigerated van and on its return, will be carried in pouches for sale upto Diglipur.

For successful implementation of the scheme, the Animal Husbandry department under the scheme Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) will be providing necessary fund to ANIIDCO for strengthening the milk supply and marketing system.
