Port Blair, Feb 8: Road safety gained more importance due to the ever increasing numbers of road accidents and other damages. Many proactive efforts are taken by the Govt. to reduce road accidents and have therefore decided to observe Road Safety Month for creating awareness among the road users.

In connection to the ongoing Road Safety Month w.e.f. 18.01.2021 to 17.02.2021, Transport Department had organized a one day awareness campaign on ‘Road Safety’ for the benefit of Private Bus Drivers & Conductors, Autorikshaw Drivers, Truck Drivers and STS Drivers & Conductors on Saturday 06.02.2021 from 0930 Hrs onwards. Nearly 200 individuals participated in the campaign.

A blood donation camp with the support of A & N AIDS Control Society, Directorate of Health Services, A & N Administration was also organized during the campaign in which 30 donors from Transport Department had voluntarily donated their blood.

Dr. Navlendra Kumar Singh, Director (Transport), the Chief Guest on the occasion appreciated all the connected persons for getting the Transport Minister’s Trophy by the UT for the third consecutive year. He appealed all to fix a target to achieve zero accidents by inculcating the habits of traffic discipline, strong determination to desist from bad practices, positive frame of mind, maintaining healthy mind & physique etc. He also advised all the drivers not to carry away with adverse thoughts which will not only spoil their driving habits but also harm other road users. Road accident is a manmade disaster which can be effectively prevented by proper driving behavior through traffic discipline and adherence to traffic laws, he added.

Earlier, Shri B. Binoy, Deputy Director welcomed all and dwelt at length the importance of observing road safety practices in every road users life.

Dr. M. Joy, Project Director, A & N AIDS Control Society also delivered his thoughts on the importance of blood donation and road safety from the health perspective.

Officials from Traffic Section, A & N Police also given important and valuable information about the provisions of amended Motor Vehicle Act 2019 and the common misconducts being observed on the roads which are committed by the road users for the benefit all present.

Shri. Rajesh Kumar, Road Safety Cell of Transport Department gave away the vote of thanks by appealing all the road users to diligently follow the traffic rules and road regulations.
