Port Blair, Sept. 5: The USAIDs-SAREP has completed the two-day capacity building workshop on Smart Meter & Smart Grid technologies from Aug. 30 to 31, 2024 which was attended by 45 Departmental Engineers of the Department in the capacity of Junior Engineers/Assistant Engineers & Executive Engineers. The workshop was aimed at enhancing the capacity in energy sector, focusing on the integration and implementation of Smart Grid technologies. The training/workshop was designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role and benefits of Smart meters and Smart grids in modernizing the energy distribution system / network.
The event was inaugurated by Director (Power) who highlighted the critical importance of Smart Grid technology in achieving energy security. The Director also commended USAID ongoing efforts in supporting energy sector reforms and fostering innovations. The key advantages of installation of Smart Meters is to eliminate manual monthly meter readings besides real time monitoring of electric system and encourage efficient usage of power resources by consumers.
Throughout the workshop participants explored various aspects of smart metering system, including enhanced network monitoring, load management, outage restoration, asset management and customer engagement. By leveraging the capabilities of smart meters, utilities can improve operational efficiency, reliability and customer satisfaction. Practical case studies and interaction sessions enabled attendees to give practical insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with smart grid implementation.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Superintending Engineer (Tech), who expressed gratitude to USAID SAREP for organizing the event and acknowledged valuable contributions of all participants. He reiterated the commitment to continue cooperation with USAID to advance the deployment of Smart Grid technologies in the region. Further, Smart meters play a pivotal role in Smart Grid by providing accurate and real time data on energy consumption and the deployment of Smart Meters is a crucial component of the modernization efforts, he said. He also mentioned that USAID remains dedicated to supporting energy sectors transition towards a more sustainable and resilient future through ongoing initiatives like this workshop.
