Port Blair, Sept. 8: World Ozone Day also recognized as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, is a yearly event observed on Sept.16.The date was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994, commemorating the date in 1987 when nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This special day aims to draw attention of everyone on this planet towards the usefulness of ozone layer, how it protects us from UV rays and how we need to protect it from damaging chemicals. The theme of World Ozone Day 2024 is ‘Ozone for Life,’ underscoring the beneficial outcomes of the Montreal Protocol in fostering the recovery of the ozone layer and mitigating climate change.

In this connection, the EIACP Centre on Island Biodiversity, Zoological Survey of India, Port Blair will be organizing an exhibition on Island Faunal Diversity from Sept. 10 to 14 as part of celebration of World Ozone Day 2024 through preserved faunal specimens, posters, pamphlets and videos.  The EIACP Centre has invited the student, teachers, and public to witness the exhibition and see the unique animal diversity.  Interested schools / colleges may arrange visit for students to the Museum during the period of exhibition.  The entry is free and open from 0900 hrs to 1700 hrs.
