Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct. 15: In a decisive and concerted effort to reclaim critical public spaces and preserve the integrity of essential infrastructure, the District Administration, South Andaman, has launched an extensive eviction drive targeting unauthorized constructions obstructing key roadways and government land.

At Bhatubasti, significant encroachments including RCC boundary walls, illegal and unauthorized projections of shops were demolished along the road stretch at Bhatu Basti market within the Garacharama Revenue Village. These illegal structures had long disrupted public movement and undermined the intended function of the roadway. As a result of the demolition, nearly 200 square meters of road area were restored to their original condition, vastly improving traffic flow and enhancing pedestrian safety.

This operation was carried out in strict accordance with the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Act, 1971, which identifies these constructions as illegal and obstructive to public spaces. The Bhatubasti area has faced a persistent issue of unauthorized developments, posing serious risks to road safety and creating unnecessary bottlenecks. By reclaiming these spaces, the District Administration is reinforcing zoning laws and prioritizing public welfare.

The ongoing eviction drive also saw action in Brookshabad village, where 1000 square meters of prime government land adjacent to the Tsunami Shelter were restored to their rightful status, following the removal of unauthorized fencing. This measure ensures the land can now serve its intended public use.

Further enforcement was carried out at Khurmadera village in Ferrargunj Tehsil, wherein three temporary roadside structures has been removed, contributing to the broader initiative of clearing illegal developments across the region.

The Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, reiterated that the District Administration maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any encroachments on government land, vowing to uphold the rule of law with the utmost diligence. He emphasized that the administration will continue its efforts to protect public assets and ensure public safety through ongoing enforcement measures.
