Port Blair, Dec. 23: Government Senior Secondary School, Sabari, Middle Andaman observed “National Mathematics Day 2012”. The theme for this year’s celebrations selected by the school was “Learn Mathematics without Fear”. Various programmes were conducted to observe the day in a meaningful manner.

In speedy Arithmetic’s, Kr Anil Varghese of X B bagged the first position. In Knowing the numbers Kri Shiny Rebekah, X A and in Mental Calculation Kr Prem Kumar X A bagged the prizes. Similarly in Formula writing Kri Priya of IX B bagged the prize. In SUDUKO solving Sweety Toppo X B, Abhishek IX A and Nagraj X A bagged the first three positions.

Earlier Principal of the school highlighted the importance of celebrating the day and mentioned that the year 2012 was declared as National Year of Mathematics in fond memory of the great Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan- and every year his birthday on December 22 is observed as National Mathematics Day. He appealed to the students to remove the fear associated with learning Mathematics from their minds.

Shri Bency Joy, Mathematics teacher of the school coordinated the whole program. He briefly explained about the importance of the day and said that it is necessary now to give up the long-drawn misconceived idea of regarding Mathematics as a difficult and hard-to-learn subject.
