Port Blair, June 6: World Environment Day is celebrated worldwide every year on 05 June. To commemorate the day the Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC) conducted a massive Beach Cleanup drive at Wandoor Beach. Over 200 service personnel of ANC and their families including children participated whole heartedly in the green cause.

The drive started in the morning and went till late afternoon, wherein huge deposits of plastic/ litter / garbage was collected from the beach and the same was disposed off at proper disposal sites, thereby restoring the beauty of beach and making it more tourist friendly. The enthusiasm and zeal of all participants made the event a grand success. Hoardings and posters depicting importance of environment conservation and ill effects of various non-degradable materials were also put up near the beach to create awareness among the locals and the tourists visiting the beach. Additionally six garbage bins were also placed permanently at various places on the beach.

The aim of the drive was to renew ANC’s commitment to protect and develop the environment of the emerald Islands. The Andaman & Nicobar Command as in the past will continue its sincere efforts by undertaking various measures and activities for preservation and improvement of a cleaner and greener environment in the Islands.
