Port Blair, July 11: On 10th July 2011 about 1100 hrs, on receipt of credible information that one Manoj Kumar Das R/o Sippighat Camp at Havelock No. 3 is in possession of CHARAS and the same is being sold in small tablet form weighing 5 Grams each. 
 
On this, further intelligence was developed and after confirmation of his presence at Havelock, a police team comprising of WSI Abita Bachan, SHO PS Havelock, SI S. Mohanan, SI N. Zainuddin and HC/910 Vijay Shankar headed by Shri B. Saigal, Dy. SP, Havelock Sub Division laid a trap to nab the suspect. The police team under the cover took possession at Havelock No. 3 Bazaar area. About 3.30 pm, the suspect was spotted near an Ice Plant at Havelock No. 3 and was moving towards Havelock Bazaar in suspicious condition. Though he was not carrying anything in his hand, but his suspicious movement created doubt in the minds of the team. The suspect was immediately rounded up by the police personnel and on conducting personal search 2 nos. of cake and 1 small piece of same substance, black in colour wrapped in a newspaper and kept in his waist weighing total 136 grams (Hahsish) was recovered. The recovered quantity of CHARAS & a mobile phone were taken into possession and the accused Manoj Kumar Das S/o Shri Madan Kumar Das, R/o Sippighat was arrested on the spot. 
 
On this a case under the relevant section of NDPS Act 1985 has been registered at PS Havelock. In order to find out the source of supply of the CHARAS, the arrested accused was put into sustained interrogation, who later disclosed that the recovered CHARAS was transported from Port Blair to Havelock on 5th July 2011 by one M. Bala Subramaniam, R/o Phongy Chaung, Port Blair with a direction to the accused to make tablets in small quantities weighing 5 gms each and to sell it for Rs. 500/- each to local and foreign tourists. 
 
Based on the above information further details about the supplier were developed and it was found that the said Bala Subramanium had come to Havelock on 9th July 2011 for collection of money from the accused Manoj Kumar Das. A search for him was made and he was nabbed on 11th July 2011 from Havelock. During the interrogation, Bala Subramanium disclosed that the contraband item “CHARAS” was procured from Kolkata about two months ago and he himself had brought the item to Havelock on 5th July 2011. The item was handed over to Manoj Kumar Das just to find out the marketing of the item at Havelock. However by timely gathering of intelligence and continuous effort by the police, the real culprits could be nabbed. 
 
Accused Bala Subramanium was also arrested in the case for transporting the contraband item to Havelock and abetment & conspiring with the prime accused Manoj Kumar Das in the sale of the contraband. Both the accused persons are being produced before the Hon’ble Court of Law for Judicial Custody.
