Port Blair, Jan. 12: A case has been registered U/s 292 IPC read with section 67 of the IT Act 2000, 3 (1) (iii) of  SC & ST Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989 and regulations 7 & 8 of the PAT Regulation 1956. The FIR is registered by the S.H.O. Bambooflat and states that a video has been recorded in which Jarawa women and children are being enticed to perform in front of tourists. The video was been made by inducement of food and other items. These acts are derogatory to human dignity, particularly in respect of a vulnerable tribal group and are an intentional insult and intimidation with the intent to humiliate them in public view through the electronic media, said S.B. Deol, the Director General of Police.

Deol further said that this also amounts to publication and transmission of lascivious material appealing to prurient interest through the electronic media.

“The video appears to have been shot on the Andaman Trunk Road by unknown persons who are violating the law by interacting with the Jarawa Tribe members. The video fleetingly shows an unidentified person in camaflouge clothes with chevrons (white stripes) on the shoulder. The women in question can be identified by the AAJVS staff”.

“It would appear that several offences may be constituted in the filming, creation and distribution and transmission of the video concerned. A detailed investigation and forensic analysis by the expert agencies would reflect the persons involved and the nature of the commission of the serious offences”.

The media reports refer to certain persons including Elliot Smith (Guardian) Gethin Chamberlain (Guardian), Alberto Caspani and persons connected to an NGO called Survival International. Further investigations are underway to detect how these individuals came to be in possession of the video and to pin-point the maker and publisher of the video and the source of the same, the DGP adds.
