Port Blair, Jan. 3: On 22nd Dec. 2011, few fishermen from Panighat area had ventured into deep seas for their regular fishing. These fishermen were unfortunately hit by Cyclone Thane and could not make their way back home. Worried about their fellow fishermen, Shri S. Hema Rao, S/o Late. Babu Rao accompanied with few others decided to venture into the sea in search of their lost friends. But the ill-fated rescue team while on their way could not escape the Cyclone that had engulfed their friends.

According to a communication from the State BJP Office, both the boats were broken by the waves and except Hema Rao, all other fishermen somehow made their way back home. The body and boat of the ill-fated Hema Rao was later found at Madhuban on 29th Dec. 2011.  

On getting this information, the State President BJP, Shri R. Mohan immediately proceeded to Panighat to take stock of the situation. It was noticed by Mohan that Hema Rao had left behind his wife Smti. S. Dhanalaxmi and two little daughters. The panic stricken family of the deceased were in a pathetic condition with poverty looming large on them.

“Mohan was surprised to note the pathetic condition of poverty all over the dilapidated house of Hema Rao. The widow was crying for help but none were there to help her, except consoling her. The Children were crying too. It was also noticed that the neighbours from the community were also leading the same life style as of Hema Rao”, said a party release.

Returning back, the State President immediately requested the Lt. Governor, ANI to sanction immediate financial help to the widow from LG's fund. He also requested for a job to the widow in a nearby area.  Mohan further requested the Lt. Governor to consider a posthumous certificate of bravery to Hema Rao, who had lost his life for a noble cause to save lives of others.

A request was also sent to the Chief Secretary to consider additional financial help from Disaster Management Fund since the accident occurred due to natural calamity and for a noble deed.
