Port Blair, Aug. 17: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have a significant population of tribes deriving livelihood from agriculture and allied sectors. Nicobarese are the most populous tribes who derive their livelihood predominantly from horticulture and fisheries. Besides, the Great Anadamanese and Onges are also known for their reliance on agricultural sector.

The Indian Council of Agriculture Research has launched an exclusive programme “Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP)” in order to increase the income and socio-economic status of tribes in the islands. CARI has made exhaustive plans to implement various activities related to plantation crop-based integrated farming system under the aegis of TSP. Series of training and demonstration programmes are envisaged under the plan and guidance of Dr. D.R. Singh, Head, Horticulture, CARI from September, 2012 in tribal inhabited islands viz., Hut Bay, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Katchal, Teressa and Campbell Bay.
