Port Blair, Aug. 14: Renowned writer, producer and film Director of the Islands, Shri Naresh Chandra Lall was today awarded Mahatma Gandhi Seva Medal by the Gandhi Global Family (GGF), New Delhi. At a function held at the Raj Niwas, the Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM gave away the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Medal to Shri Naresh Chandra Lall.

Speaking on the occasion, the Lt Governor appreciated Shri Naresh Chandra Lall for being honoured with the prestigious award by the GGF, New Delhi. “Shri Lall has done a remarkable work by sharing on the silver screen Gandhian values and ideology through the Islands’ perspective”, he said. He stated that these Islands are a role model in terms of following the ideology and teaching of Gandhiji. The unity in diversity and communal harmony prevailing in the Islands stand testimony to the Gandhian values followed in true spirit in the Islands.

The Lt Governor also noted with appreciation that Shri Lall is the only person from the Islands who had graduated from National School of Drama, New Delhi. Lauding Shri Lall for bringing laurels to these Islands by producing and directing films/documentaries on social themes, he stated that Shri Lall has worked with some of the noted filmmakers and also produced and directed films/documentaries such as Amrit Jal, Runway On the Sea and Gandhi-The Mahatma which have been appreciated by the people across the country.

In his brief address, Shri Naresh Chandra Lall suggested for documentation of Islands history and the exemplary works carried out by the islanders in the field of Sports, Arts & Culture.

Earlier, welcoming the chief guest and others on the occasion, the Vice-President, Gandhi Global Family, Padmashree, Shri S. P. Verma highlighted the future plans of GGF towards preaching Gandhi’s value in the Islands and elsewhere in the country.

The function concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the Convenor, GGF, A&N Islands Unit, Shri Sharda Ram.
