Port Blair, Sept. 2: It seems to be a good sign for the dwindling tribes of Little Andaman as three children were born during the past one month.

Today at 7.20 am, a healthy male child weighing 2.4 Kg was born to an Onge couple, Shri Raj Kumar and Smti Geetai. With the birth of this child, the population has increased to 107.

According to sources, the mother is suffering from Post Partem bleeding. All efforts are on to nurse the mother and health workers posted at Primary Health Centre, RK Pur seemed to be positive over recovery of the mother.

Earlier on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012 a female child was born to an Onge couple namely Smti. Meena Kumari W/o Rakesh R/o Dugong Creek. The child weighed 2 Kgs and the mother and child are doing well.

Another male child was born to a tribe couple, Smti Rajini and Shri Madan on 20th Aug. 2012 at 11.45 pm. With the birth of this male child, the Onge population had increased to 106.

In a tragic incident during December 2008, eight male members of the tribe had died after consuming some spurious fluid found on the sea shore. During January 2009, the AAJVS under the leadership of Smti. Sodhi, former Secretary Tribal Welfare had persuaded four male members of the tribe to remarry four widows who had suddenly lost their spouses in December 2008.
