Port Blair, March 20: Kumari Deborah, who made the Islands proud by winning three medals in International cycling tournament was today felicitated by the Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM in presence of the First Lady of the Islands, Smt Bhawanee Singh. The Lt Governor gave her cash award of seven lakh rupees and appointment letter for the post of Assistant Sub-Inspector (Executive) in the A&N Police department. Kumari Deborah had won one silver and two bronze medals in the 33rd Hero Asian Cycling Championship held in Indira Gandhi Stadium Velodrome, New Delhi.
Congratulating the medallist, the Lt Governor stated that it was the happiest day for him as Kumari Deborah had done the state and the nation proud by her remarkable feat. He further stated that it was really amazing and delightful to know that Kumari Deborah bagged one medal after another and out of the total of four medals bagged by the country, three medals was won by her alone. This is an occasion of honour and pride for not only the people of the Islands but for the nation as a whole, he stated. The Lt Governor further stated that it was only because of her hard work, dedication and perseverance that she could excel so brilliantly in the International cycling event adding that this is an extraordinary accomplishment by a tsunami affected girl from Car Nicobar. Describing Kumari Deborah as Mary Kom (Bronze medallist in Boxing even in Olympic Games from Manipur) of the Islands, the Lt Governor asked her to continue to work hard to aspire for a gold medal in the Olympic Games.
The Chief Captain, Car Nicobar, Shri Aberdeen Blair, Chief Secretary, officiating DGP, senior officers of Police and civil administration were present on the occasion.
