Car Nicobar, April 2: The only ATM in Car Nicobar installed by the State Bank of India has stopped functioning due to technical problems. It has been 10 days now, and the residents of the island especially govt. servants are forced to bear the brunt. Most of the govt. servants posted in Car Nicobar have their accounts in SBI, Port Blair branch. The ATM was the only way out for them.

Every day people come to the ATM with great hope but leave in despair. Being the only ATM, people of all the 15 villages totally depended. It was announced that the ATM would be repaired within 10 days but unfortunately there does not seem to be any sign of it.

Many Govt. Servant Servants were seen borrowing money even to purchase tickets for Port Blair. Sources inform that the SBI staff in Car Nicobar have hinted that the Engineers are reluctant to come to this remote and hard area, so they are avoiding.

Non-functioning of the only ATM has also disappointed the members of the Tribal Council. The Captain of the Malacca Village and the Treasurer of the Tribal Council Mr. Herbertson expressing his unhappiness said that SBI has been neglecting the areas like Nicobar. In spite of so many requests the Bank Management has failed to fulfil the demands of the people. He said that it’s unfortunate that the people are forced to suffer the miseries.
