Port Blair, Aug 13: In a move to improve the students’ career prospects, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved a proposal to allow students to pursue two degree programmes at the same time. One of the degrees has to be in the regular mode (college / University) and the other either in open and distance learning or online. A student can pursue two degrees in different streams as well as from different institutions. S/he may also opt for the same institution, provided it offers multiple mode of learning. Port Blair, Aug 11: There has been a backlog in testing COVID-19 samples, which is now a matter of great concern for the islanders. In most of the news cases, the swab samples are taken after the patients show signs and symptoms. Unfortunately the test results are received only after a gap of 5 days and in many cases it goes upto 7 days.

Port Blair, Aug 11: The residents of Bambooflat and adjoining areas have always been demanding for a standby boat at the jetty to shift emergency cases to Port Blair’s GB Pant Hospital. It’s a very old demand since the place is isolated and in order to reach Port Blair by road, any person has to travel for atleast an hour. On certain occasions, heeding to the requests of the residents, the Directorate of Shipping Services had stationed standby boats at the jetty during night, to meet such challenges. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially after the lockdown has been announced, there are no standby boats, which has been affecting the people badly.
