Port Blair, Aug. 9: A family who finds their home burgled, their money and property gone, is aggrieved by the loss. However, what effects members of the family most is the safety and honour of mothers, wives, sisters and daughters.

Men and boys who feel eve-teasing and sexual harassment on the streets is ‘fun’ and acceptable, who send unwanted phone calls or messages, who stalk women or who try to blackmail them, are in for unpleasant experiences at the hands of the A & N Police, said the Director General of Police, A&N Islands Shri SBS Deol today.

‘The A&N Police has declared a war against sexual harassment IN ANY FORM’, he said.

Plainclothes deployment of policemen and decoy policewomen will be detailed around ladies schools, colleges and tuition centres.

A&N Police has also warned the owners of Bars where the customers eventually stand outside and pass unwanted or lewd remarks after consuming alcohol that their licences will be cancelled on the recommendation of the police to the District Magistrate.

Parents must counsel their sons to desist from such activities. The police does not need written complaints to lock up eve-teasers, the DG Police said.

The attitude that these occurrences are to be tolerated because “boys will be boys” is no longer relevant. Eve teasing and sexual harassment are offences against the state and society, and cannot be ‘compromised’ at a later date.

The A&N Police has appealed parents and girls/women to ensure that a whistle is carried at all times in a pocket or purse. No harasser can stand his ground if a whistle is sounded. He will run before the public collects. Ladies should subsequently also alert the P.C.R. (100 number) with a description of the physical features, vehicles registration number, clothing and location of such ‘eve teasers’ so that a search can be launched. Such men have done it before and will do it again, unless taught a lesson by legal action and the shame of being exposed for what they really are.
