Port Blair, Sept. 14: The Birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya (1861-1962) is observed every year on 15 Sep as Engineer’s Day in India. This year, Naval Ship Repair Yard commemorated the legendary engineer’s birth anniversary with the students of Dr B R Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Pahargaon, Port Blair by organising a visit to the Yard’s repair facilities and Floating Dock Navy-1 on 14 Sep 12. 

The programme was a combined initiative of the Andaman & Nicobar Command and Naval Ship Repair Yard towards development of technical human resource pool in Andaman & Nicobar Islands by knowledge sharing.  The onsite interaction between the personnel and engineers of the Yard and the students on intricate aspects of ship repairs has proved to be extremely invigorating to the budding engineers

On arrival, the students were briefed on various facilities of the Yard by NSRY’s coordinating team. The students were taken around various repair facilities of Air Conditioning & Refrigeration plants, Internal Combustion Engines, Pumps & Compressors and Fabrication and Outfitting Shops.  The Yard’s team took particular interest to give exposure to the students on high-end technology areas like CNC machining, telecommunications, gyro, navigational aids, radars and PCB repairs facilities etc. 

In addition to exposure to complete spectrum of ship repair activities, the students had onsite interaction with highly experienced civilian work force, supervisors, service personnel and officers of the Yard.

The young technical minds were particularly impressed by the visit to the Floating Dock and its state of the art machinery and showed keen interest in knowing the nuances of docking & undocking operations onboard the Floating Dock Navy-1.

During the interaction with the Commodore Superintendent of the Yard, the Commodore impressed upon the students to be focused on achieving professional excellence and that “every small aspect they learn in the engineering college has enormous application where is they can contribute to nation building. While recalling significant contributions made by Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya on executing major pioneering projects like KR Sagar dam, he advised the students to draw inspiration not only from bold engineering acumen, but also with commitment and passion to their  profession and country.

Shri Utpal Sharma, Principal, DBRAIT who coordinated the visit from the A&N Administration thanked Andaman & Nicobar Command and NSRY(PBR) on the initiative and said that such institute-industry interaction will go a long way in building sound technical human resource pool for the nation.
