Port Blair, March 5: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, has directed that damages caused due to natural calamities such as heavy rain and earthquake etc. will be assessed by a Committee. The Committee will be headed by the Deputy Commissioner (South Andaman) with the Superintending Engineers of Zilla Parishad, South Andaman and PBMC as members and the Deputy Director, Directorate of Disaster Management as Member Secretary. The Committee will also suggest possible solutions & prevention measures.

The Committee will conduct joint inspection at all the locations and examine cases of land sliding, damages and displacement of retaining walls in and around Port Blair and Ferrargunj. After inspection of the site, the Committee will give report on all aspects such as whether the house site is duly allotted by the Administration, whether the construction is as per laws/ whether the construction has entailed a change in topography, whether the problem has occurred purely due to heavy monsoon or due to improper construction, solution to the problems and action taken by Regulatory agencies. The Committee will submit the report within a week.

The Lt Governor has also directed the Committee to hold quarterly meeting and generate maximum awareness among the people through proper publicity.
