Lakshadweep Becomes the Only Union Territory Under Indian Jurisdiction Without Single Case of COVID-19, While Andaman & Nicobar Islands Heads for Disaster

Port Blair, July 8: As India overtook Russia and became the nation with the third most number of COVID-19 cases, Lakshadweep, the archipelago of 36 islands, seems to have cracked the code to tackle the virus, at least for now. The islands, the country’s smallest Union Territory with a population of about 64,000 and lying about 380 km off Kochi, has the rare distinction of becoming the only region under the Indian jurisdiction where not even a single case of COVID-19 has been reported till now, reported the New Indian Express a couple of days ago.

Governor, A&N Islands to provide land at the premises of GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair for construction of a building under MPLAD fund to create accommodation facilities for the Inter Islands patient’s attenders.

Port Blair, July 8: The Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad, South Andaman, Shri Subir Chander in a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor has taken up the issue of exorbitant rate charged for sand imported from mainland. The cost of construction materials have shot up the roof in our islands for the past couple of years. Adding insult to injury, the cost of sand also has escalated indiscriminately!

Port Blair, July 8: Bharatiya Janata Party led by its State President, Shri Ajoy Bairagi after noticing the problems being faced by large number of passengers/localities has requested the concerned officials of Directorate of Shipping Services, A & N Administration, Port Blair through Shri. Raja the State Coordinator (Shipping Sector), BJP – A & N Islands, for resumption of the services of one speed boat with capacity of 75 – 100 Pax between Rangat to Swaraj Dweep and vice-versa, as was being plied prior to lockdown, at the earliest.
