Port Blair, Sept. 13: The 12th Battalion of the JAT Regiment observed 30th Martyr’s Day at Brichgunj today to pay homage to its war heroes who lost lives in the line of duty.

On the occasion, the regiment conducted a wreath laying ceremony and observed two minutes silence to pay tribute to the martyrs. Thereafter, the unit gathered at ‘Sarva Dharma Sthal’ and offered prayers in a befitting ceremony.

On this day, in 1988, the Battalion had lost six brave hearts, including two officers in an operation against LTTE in Sri Lanka. Therefore this day is celebrated every year as Martyr’s Day by the unit in everlasting memory of the brave sons of “Bahadur 12” who made the supreme sacrifice of their lives to preserve the integrity of the mother land.

Since it’s raising on 06 February 1970, the Battalion has had the honour of participating in all the operations undertaken by the Indian Army to include 1971 Indo- Pak war, Operation Pawan, Operation Rakshak, Operation Meghdoot and Operation Parakram. On this day the unit personnel pledge once again to follow the personal example of ‘Duty Before Self’ set by the martyrs.

As part of the service traditions of the Indian Armed Forces, units of the Indian Army commemorate the supreme sacrifice of their martyr’s by celebrating Martyr’s Day.
