Port Blair, May 1: May Day was celebrated all over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands jointly by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions today (1.5.2024) by organizing various programmes.  

The main programme was held at Port Blair. The May Day Rally was taken out from Delanipur junction, which, after making a round of the important points of Port Blair town culminated in a public meeting at Tiranga Park. Hundreds of workers participated in the May Day Rally at Port Blair. May Day Rally was led by R. Surendran Pillai, B. Chandrachoodan, D. Ayyappan, M. Boominathan, Anand Rajan, M. Yugandar among others.  Members of Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers Association also joined the procession.    

Addressing the massive gathering of workers at Tiranga Park public meeting, B. Chandrachoodan, General Secretary, CITU State Committee critcised the BJP-led government at the centre for pursuing various anti-worker policies during the last ten years. He said that if the BJP comes to power again, all the benefits being enjoyed by the working class in the country will be curtailed to a great extent. 

Speaking on the occasion, D. Ayyappan, Vice President, CITU while explaining the origin of the May Day celebration in the world, following the uprising of workers at the Hay Market of Chicago on 1st May, 1886 with their demand for 8 hours duty, said that the Modi government in India is trying to fix the working hours upto 12 hours per day. He said that the assets of the country created by the workers with their sweat and blood are being sold out to Modi’s friends in the corporate world like Adani and Ambani.   

Senior leader D. Laxman Rao also addressed the meeting. SP Kalairajan, Secretary, CITU State Committee proposed vote of thanks.  

At Campbell Bay, the May Day Rally was taken out by CITU at Campbell Bay Bazaar which was led by R. Dhandapani, CITU State Committee Member, Nithin, Secretary, ASNVMS, Campbell Bay Branch and Sudarshan. At Katchal, the May Day Rally was taken out which was led by Balamurugan and Thyagarajan of ASNVMS, Katchal Branch. At Hut Bay, the May Day Rally was taken out at Hut Bay bazaar which was led by MA Karim of Govt. Motor Transport Drivers Union.
