Port Blair, July 26: The National Students Union of India, a frontal organisation of Congress Party Organized a blood donation camp at Tiranga Park today under the leadership of Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma in connection with the 14th Kargil Vijay Diwas. On the occasion the PCC Chief lauded the efforts of the students who came forward to donate their blood.

Sharma said that donating blood is to save a valuable life. Among others who spoke on the occasion were Dr MK Mahato, Dy. Director Blood Safety, GBP Hospital under whose supervision the camp was organized, Smti Rantna Kanna, Chairperson, Social welfare Board, Mahinder Prasad, Councillor ward No: 7.

A total of 28 students donated their blood out of which 10 were girls. Later the PCC President distributed medicines to those volunteer girls who came forward to donate blood, but could not do, for building their health. The vote of thanks was proposed by Tanmay Mallick, President, NSUI while Rajendran welcomed the Chief Guest and others.

Port Blair, July 26: The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, A&N Islands today organised a Padyatra on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas. The yatra started from Cellular Jail and reached Kargil Martyrs Memorial at TGCE. The BJYM team later accompanied by the Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Shri K Paramasivam, Secretary BJYM and other leaders visited the statue of Shaheed Ramesh Singh at Shadipur, Shaheed Dilli Rao at Dairy Farm and Shahid Capt. Asheem Bhattacharya Park at Junglighat and paid tributes.

Port Blair, July 26: A Delegation of DMK State Committee led by the State Organiser, Shri.A.R. Marudhavanan met the Lt. Governor, Hon’ble A.K.Singh at Raj Niwas today at 11.30 a.m. The Lt. Governor gave a patient hearing and discussed various issues like employment generation, Internet connectivity, BPL list, Free books for students and alternate means of water source other than Dhanikari Dam. Later on the DMK Delegation paid Tributes to the Kargil Matyrs at the Kargil Memorial in the Marina Park Complex.

Port Blair, July 26: The Lt Governor being on official tour to New Delhi would not be present for Tuesday’s public hearing on 30th July 2013. Port Blair, July 26: The Animal Science Division, CARI in collaboration with NABARD, Port Blair has conducted 3 days training programme on Women Empowerment on Rural Poultry by enhanced Rural Poultry Farming Techniques at Ferrargunj from 23rd to 25th July 2013 under the project funded by NABARD. Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CARI was the chief guest and Shri. Gananath Tarai, General Manager, NABARD, Port Blair was the guest of honour during the inaugural programme.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest Dr. S. Dam Roy briefed the significant role of Nicobari fowl, its suitability for backyard condition and motivated the women trainees to form self help group for better output from rural poultry in a coordinated manner.

Shri Gananath Tarai appreciated the active participation of women in the training programme. He briefed about the function of NABARD and motivated the women to come forward for availing the loan for betterment of their livelihood. Principal Investigator of the project, Dr.T.Sujatha informed about the importance & significance of rural poultry and the role of women, need for scientific management and introduction of mini incubator for the benefit of rural women. Dr.A.Kundu, Course Director and Head, Division of Animal Sciences gave a glimpse on scientific management of backyard poultry.

During three days training programme, trainees were imparted with knowledge on housing, feeding and health management. Hands on training on incubator operation and brooding of day old chicks were also given. Dr.M.S.Kundu, Sr.Scientist, Dr.Jai Sunder, Sr.Scientist of CARI and Dr.N.C.Choudhury of KVK, Port Blair also delivered lectures on feed and feeding of poultry, prevention and control of diseases and housing management. Shri L.B.Singh, I/C Programme Coordinator, KVK highlighted on formation of Model poultry village involving women groups of Ferreargunj. 

During the valedictory function held on 25th July 2013 at Garacharma, Director, CARI, Dr.S.Dam Roy, appreciated the active participation of the women and the interest shown for the successful completion of the training and encouraged them to proceed further towards their empowerment.  He was happy to note that the trainees were able to enhance their knowledge level on rural poultry farming to great extent. 

Technical folders on mini-incubator and low cost feed formulation with locally available materials were released. The training programme was attended by 40 women farmers.

Port Blair, July 26: ‘Helen Keller special school and Salvation Fellowship Trust’ along with Giants Group of Chembur in association with Gram Panchayat, Garacharma-I will be organising a comprehensive eye check and education on eye care awareness programme.

The awareness programme is scheduled to be held at Neil Island, Community Hall/ Hospital on 27th July 2013 from 10.00AM to 1.00PM, at Havelock Community hall/ Hospital on 28th Jul 2013 between 10.00AM to 1.00PM and at GB Pant Auditorium on 29th July between 10.00AM to 1.00PM

The highlights of programme are:                Comprehensive Eye Check up.  Low Vision evaluation  Computer vision syndrome.  Cataract/Glaucoma evaluation.  Pediatric evaluation

Lectures will be delivered on the topics  General Eye care awareness,               Low vision/Blindness, Women and eye care, Eye Donation, Sports-indoor-badminton, Sign language for Hearing Impaired and on Vocational/ educational Rehabilitation on special cases.

The resource persons include: Dr.Yogita Rajgandhi M.D D.C.T D.MT C.C.M. , Optometrist and contact lens specialist, Consulting Naturopath. Jothi Ranjan Mishra B.P.Ed, Puri District Secretary-Badminton association, Council member for state Badminton Association, 13 times represented Orissa state for Nationals in Badminton. B. L. Deepakkumar, Advance trainer in computers for Blinds, Medical Transcriptionist, General Secretary, Helen Keller special school. Close Coordination Between Departments/ Agencies Needed to Take Precautionary Measures: LG

Port Blair, July 25: The Lt Governor, A&N Islands today reviewed the preparedness for averting crocodile attacks in a meeting attended by Chief Secretary, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Chief Wildlife Warden of A & N Administration.

The Lt. Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) AK Singh, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM during the review meeting emphasized that awareness among the local public living adjacent to creeks and nallahs should be taken up on top priority. The awareness campaign should be taken up with the help of electronic and print media regularly.

He also said that the DFOs in collaboration with the PRI members should create awareness among the local residents in a pro-active manner especially during monsoon and the breeding season of crocodile (April to August). During Gram Sabhas/ public gatherings/ local melas the forest officials should take up mass awareness campaigns in a prominent way. The people should be advised against venturing into the areas inhabited by crocodiles.

Crocodile gets attracted towards human habitations due to disposal of animal waste. Special efforts should be taken by the District Administration/ Police Authorities to prevent disposal/ dumping of poultry waste/ fish waste/ dead animals/ cattle/ dogs/ animal waste in the creek areas. Punitive action should be taken against the violators.

In beaches frequented by tourists, the Lt. Governor desired that patrolling using motor boats of Police Department should be carried out with trained guards equipped with implements to handle emergency situations. The possibility of fixing nets in beaches should be explored. A Rapid Response Team shall also be thought of for promptly responding and taking necessary action immediately after an attack of crocodile.

The Lt. Governor further directed that there should be close coordination among all the departments/ agencies concerned - Forest, Police, Tourism, District Administration, PRI members in taking all precautionary measures for averting any attack by crocodile in future.
