I am hopeful that, in my lifetime, I am going to see a disruptive change in the eating and wearing of animal flesh. It is coming fast : the largest slaughter companies, and the largest investors in the world, have invested in laboratory created real meat (called clean meat) and milk. These meats are already in the market in countries like Singapore. Perfect Day, which makes milk cells, is on the market with yoghurt (under the label Smitten) that is made of animal free dairy. The Netherlands and Israel are far ahead in meat grown from in-vitro animals’ cell culture, instead of from slaughtered animals. Indeed, if clean meat would replace intensive farming as an industry standard, the benefits for the environment would be immense. As consumers, we would also have “cleaner” meat, meaning a product that doesn’t have the antibiotic residues and bacterial contamination that come with slaughtered meat. We would also save the lives of over 56 billion animals yearly. Yes, that’s the number of animals that are eaten every year by humans.

There is a school for 400 children in Solan, Himachal, called Southvale: The World School. The school is run by young MBAs. The owner is Rishabh Chopra and the technical operations are under Snigdha Parihar. It emphasizes on education, but more than that, a moral social code with compassion towards all. “We believe in raising a league of future generations that is socially, morally and intellectually awake.”

5 years ago I requested the Head of the Bar Council of India to get animal welfare introduced as a subject in the law colleges. He did it immediately. The result has been much more sensitive and informed lawyers, an annual moot court that is hosted by NLU Bangalore, PhDs in animal welfare (the first one was in NLU Cuttack), more people aware of animal welfare activism and far more sensitive judges. A big thank you to Shri Manan Kumar Mishra!

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all the cells in your body. Your body needs cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help you digest foods. Cholesterol comes from two sources: Your liver which makes all the cholesterol you need. The cholesterol in your body that you do not need comes from animal bodies.

Even though people have been vegetarian for centuries (Confucious, Plato, Jesus and his brother John, Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein, are some that I can think of outside India), the term vegetarian was coined in 1839 and referred to people who ate a plant-based diet.
For the last 200 years, since commercial slaughterhouses were invented, people became strong meat eaters and the result has been devastation on the planet. Now both realization and reaction has set in all over the world. Being vegetarian is fashionable. Few people will now insist in public that they are die hard meat eaters. Most say apologetically “we don’t eat meat at home” or “we don’t eat it very often” . Many people will say they are vegetarian – but they eat some fish, others eat eggs, others milk. I know one vegetarian who eats the gravy of meat dishes with the excuse that it is made of vegetables !! Everyone has a different definition of what they do and don’t want to eat - as vegetarians.
