Port Blair, May 21: As per the Solid Waste Management & Handling Rules 2000 it is mandatory to have door to door collection in all the days including Sundays and holidays. The Rules further prescribe that the waste of biodegradable and non-biodegradable area are also to be collected separately from individual households.

In this regard a meeting with the Sanitary Officer and Sanitary Inspectors was called by the Chairman PBMC, Shri PB Murugan on 17th May 2013 in the conference hall of the council. During the course of the meeting it was emerged that no appointment has been made in the Sanitary Section since long. The sanitary workers’ strength has been reduced considerably due to death/ retirement and termination of the labourers due to long absence from duty.
