Port Blair, Aug. 30: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A K Singh PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, visited the Humfreygunj Memorial and paid tributes to the martyrs by laying a wreath at Balidan Vedi. He interacted with the families of the martyrs and issued directions to the Chief Engineer (APWD) and Tourism Department to complete the museum-cum-art gallery by 1st December 2013. He further observed that after completion of the works, the maintenance be taken over by village Panchayat. He also suggested that the village people involve themselves in keeping the area clean and maintain it appropriately.  

Thereafter, the Lt Governor visited the Primary Health Centre at Chouldhari. He took a round of the hospital and interacted with the patients. He expressed his satisfaction at the upkeep and maintenance of the hospital.

Later, the Lt Governor visited Stewartgunj and held a meeting with PRI members at the Community Hall, Stewartgunj. Shri Abdul Aziz, Pradhan, Stewartgunj welcomed the Lt Governor and highlighted issues of the people of Stewartgunj. Other PRI members and people from Stewartgunj and Wimberlygunj placed their grievances before the Hon’ble Lt Governor.

Smt Abala Smmaddar, Adhyaksha, Zilla Parishad (South Andaman), Smt Mariam Bibi, South Andaman Zilla Parishad Member, Shri Mohd. Safiq, Pramukh, Panchayat Samiti, Ferrargunj and senior officers of the Administration were present.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Lt Governor reiterated that collective efforts and better coordination among various agencies as well as initiatives by the PRIs is a must for fast and meaningful development of the Islands. He laid emphasis on maintaining transparency and accountability by public functionaries in discharge of their responsibilities.

Thereafter, the Lt Governor visited Kamsarathnallah and inspected the site of the proposed earthen dam to be constructed there.

At the end of the tour, the Lt Governor visited Vivekananda Kendra Zilla Parishad Vidyalaya, Port Mout and paid floral tributes at the statue of Swami Vivekananda there. He interacted with the students and was happy to see the high standard of education of the school. The Lt Governor also visited Govt. Senior Secondary School, Port Mout. He issued direction to the Chief Engineer (APWD) to take an early decision for dismantling of the damaged building. He also issued directions for installing water purifiers in the school for the use of children.

Car Nicobar, Aug. 28: Renowned veteran national Footballer of the Islands and Ex-Primary School Teacher Shri Wellington Cyrill passed away last mid night at his residence at Small Lapathy, after long illness. He is survived by his Wife Mrs. Consisa and 4 children.

Hundreds of people from different villages started coming to his residence, the moment they heard the news of the death of this 64 years old legendry footballer. The body was cremated around 11 am at the small Lapathy grave yard.

Calling him an Iconic Sportsman, the first captain of Small Lapathy Mrs. Ireena Mark told that he was the role model to the younger aspirants of football. With his death not only Car Nicobar but the entire Sports fraternity of this Islands has lost a legendry Sportsman.

Sharing her emotions the wife of Shri Wellington Mrs. Consisa said, he always wanted to see the Islands young Sportsmen reach the pinnacle of glory in the field of Sports.

The Education Officer Shri H. Nathaniel Condoling his death informed that during his School days Wellington represented the Islands Football team in the Prestigious National Subroto Mukherjee Cup Championship for three consecutive years; from 1964 to 1966. People still remember the news which they heard that in one of the matches Wellington alone scored 11 goals in the crucial match of the Tournament. Impressed by his outstanding play, the National Selectors chose him for the Junior Asian Championship. Later he was selected by the apex Football club of the country Mohan Bagan, for which he played for one year and played crucial role in many of the victories of the team.

Meanwhile he got job in the Education Department to work as Primary School Teacher after formal training. Soon after, he was selected for the Officer’s Training of NCC-Naval Wing. He served with distinction on this post and inspired many students to join NCC and dedicate them in the service of Nation. 

Recipients of many wards Shri Wellington was conferred the life time Achievement Award on the National Sports Day in 2008, by the Department of Sports.

A young Physical Education Teacher of Tapoiming School and a very good Sportsman, Shri Thompson William told that he always used to come on the fields and gave tips to the young Footballers. We are going to miss him, he said.

Expresses His Dissatisfaction Over Management of Forest Corporation 

Port Blair, Aug. 27: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) A. K. Singh, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, reviewed the functioning of Police and Forest Departments of A&N Administration. According to a Raj Niwas source, all major projects and key issues were discussed. Hon’ble Lt Governor directed that timeline in respect of all projects to be adhered to. He further directed that DG Police and PCCF shall monitor them on a regular basis. The Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash and senior officers of the two Departments were present.

While reviewing the functioning of A&N Islands Forest and Plantation Development Corporation Ltd, the Lt Governor expressed his dissatisfaction the way the Corporation is being managed. He directed the PCCF, who is also the Chairman of the Corporation to take immediate steps to improve the working of the Corporation. He directed the Chief Secretary to constitute a Committee under the Chairmanship of Shri Shashi Kumar, PCCF with the Secretary (Law) and Secretary (Finance) to suggest ways and means of improving the financial condition of the Corporation and a future roadmap.      

Later, the Social Welfare Department made a presentation on the functioning of the welfare homes. Hon’ble Lt Governor directed the Department and APWD to ensure their proper maintenance and that all pending renovation work of the homes be completed in a time bound manner. Hon’ble Lt Governor also discussed the new schemes initiated by the Social Welfare Department.
