Port Blair, March 6: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM has approved the lifting of ban on transportation of poultry and poultry products like live chicken, dressed chicken, poultry eggs, processed poultry products etc. from Kolkata, West Bengal to A&N Islands by airlines and ships with immediate effect. The ban was imposed in January 2008, when there was an outbreak of Avian Influenza in two districts of West Bengal.

Transportation of poultry and all poultry products from Kolkata, West Bengal to these Islands by airlines and ships or by any other means of transport was thus banned to check the entry of Avian Influenza into the Islands.

Now since the said areas have been declared free from the disease, the ban was lifted. The lifting of ban on transportation of poultry products from Kolkata is likely to bring down the prices of poultry products in the Islands.
