Port Blair, Jan 19: Asian Waterbird Census is a part of the global International Waterbird Census (IWC) organised by the Wetland International and jointly coordinated in India with BNHS. This citizen-science programme is supporting conservation and management of wetlands and waterbirds worldwide.

Andaman Avians Club conducted this census with its total team and volunteers in the all the major wetlands of South Andaman. Earlier the census sessions were conducted by the club focusing on the Wetland Bird Identification Techniques and documentation of the data required for the census. 

During this census a total of around 1500 birds of more than 60 different species were recorded including few rare visitors like the White Browed Crake, Grey Headed Lapwing to the Islands. Andaman Avians Club has been doing this census 4th time in a row since 2017.
