Port Blair, Sept. 30: It is a moment of pride for the Islands that a person who was born and got his basic Schooling in the Islands in Carmel High School and KV I before undergoing MBBS course following allotment of medical seat by the Administration, has made unprecedented achievements in the field of ophthalmology. He is now stands among top ranked ophthalmologists in not only in our country but also in world arena.
Dr. Shibu Varkey (MS, DNB, DO, FRCS, Phaco & Refractive), Regional Medical Director at Vasan Eye Care Trichy, Tamil Nadu is probably the first and only ophthalmologist to undertake permanent eye colour change surgeries in India. And is one among the few hands world over. He performed India’s first permanent eye colour change in Trichy in the year 2012. Persons who got their eye colour changed at the hands of Dr Shibu Varkey include Rock star Toryn Green, Super model Katrina Vuchowa, WWF fame Magnus among other celebrities.
The Forbes India had named him as one of the Doctors among the three Medical Breakthroughs in India for 2012.
Apart from Eye Colour Change Surgeries, Dr Shibu Verkay has performed over 1 lakh Cataract Surgeries, over 4000 refractive surgeries, more than 200 Glaucoma surgeries, Eye muscle surgeries, Oculoplastic surgeries, Orbital surgeries, Keratoconus, Corneal Transplantation, Pterygium Surgeries among other interventions.
Dr Shibu Varkey along with Dr Vinitha R Philip (both Specialist Eye Surgeons), who are currently on a visit to the Islands from Tirchy are conducting two day Free Eye Screening Camp at Mar Thoma Mission School, Ograbraj, South Andaman on 30th Sept. and 1st Oct. 2016 from 9.30 am to 4.00 pm on both the days.
This camp is being organized as a part of Golden Jubilee Project of St. Thomas Mar Thoma Syrian Church, Port Blair.
