Port Blair, Nov. 1: Four persons have been arrested from Jharkhand by a police team of PS CCS in the ATM Fraud cases.

Large number of cases has been registered at PS Central Crime Station (CCS) under sections 420 IPC and 66(D) IT (Amendment) Act, 2008 regarding cheating by unknown persons impersonating as General Manager, SBI Bank and demanding confidential information from SBI account holders such as account number, debit card number, ATM pin etc. and used them to withdraw money from their accounts through unauthorised online transactions. Prima- facie it appears that the number of victims in A&N Island could be in hundreds.

Based on the complaints received, a team of CCS was constituted under the supervision of SP (CID) Mrs. Aslam Khan IPS comprising of DySPs Nishant Gupta, Sandeep & Dhirendra Pratap Singh, Sub- Inspectors Usman Ali & PMK Kumar and PC/ Vikas Kumar Yadav to investigate the ATM fraud cases.

Initial investigation revealed that this racket was being operated from Jharkhand and neighbouring states. Upon this lead, a team led by DySP Dhirendra P. Singh, along with SI Usman Ali and PMK Kumar was sent to Jharkhand, where they stationed for over 10 days and the accused were arrested after series of raids with the help of local police and SP Deoghar and SP Jamtara.

The accused namely Shyam Sunder Mandal (19 yrs), Prakash Mandal (26 yrs), Manoj Kumar Mandal (20 yrs) and Dinesh Kumar Mandal (21 yrs), were taken on transit remand and were brought to A&N Islands today morning. In total, 7 mobile phones, 9 SIM cards, 4 SBI bank passbooks and 1 ATM card were recovered from the accused. With the arrest of the above accused, the A&N Police has not only set an example to their counterparts in the country but has created a history by busting the notorious racket, known to have cheated many others in the mainland India.  

Addressing a press conference today, the SP (CID) Mrs. Aslam Khan today said that a total of five persons were arrested but since one is a juvenile, he was handed over to the concerned authorities at Jharkhand. Investigations revealed that the culprits operated in different groups with a number of SIM Cards, phones and managed to collect the customer data base from private mobile companies operating in the Islands. The calls were made at random and whosoever revealed the confidential information about their bank accounts had fallen prey. The gang used smart phones to delete the original account and the money was transferred in small amounts within minutes after the victims revealed the information.

Khan further reveals that among the many victims who had fallen prey to the gang are govt. servants. As of now there are 8 FIRs registered but is predicted that the victims are many and from across the islands. Records indicate that an amount of Rs. 50-60,000/- has been withdrawn as on date but is expected to be more.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, Khan explains while informing that the investigation on how the culprits could acquire the customer data base from the mobile network operators in the islands. Meanwhile investigation is also on to reveal whether there is any involvement of the concerned bank employees, she said.

People are advised not to share confidential information such as their Card Number, ATM pin or any other confidential information regarding their account with anybody. In case, bank officials ask such information, they can visit the bank and clarify the same.

Port Blair, Oct. 31: Coastal Security in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands gets a fillip as the Indian Navy starts inducting fourteen Fast Interceptor Crafts (FICs). Air Marshal PK Roy, AVSM, VM, VSM, ADC Commander-In-Chief, Andaman & Nicobar Command today formally inducted four of these boats at Port Blair in an impressive ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion the CINCAN Air Marshal PK Roy expressed confidence that the FICs would play a pivotal role in enhancing security in the islands. These fourteen boats are being inducted for enhancing maritime security across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and are planned to be based at Port Blair, Diglipur, Kamorta and Campbell Bay. The FICs are manned by the Sagar Prahari Bal, which was raised in the aftermath of 26/11 Mumbai attack. The primary role of these crafts are to undertake scouting and support operations, provide maritime security to off-shore assets and escorts of high value assets.

The FICs, manufactured by Solas Marine and manned by a crew of four are 16 meter long, made from glass fibre reinforced composites and are capable of attaining speeds up to 50 knots with and endurance of 200 nm. The vessels have excellent sea-keeping abilities and dynamic stability at high speed and can withstand high sea states. These state-of-art boats are water jet propelled and fitted with machine guns, night vision devises, communication equipment, automatic identification system (AIS) and radar besides carrying long range acoustic device (LARD).

Infrastructure  to man and support these crafts are also planned to be created at Port Blair, Diglipur, Kamorta and Campbell Bay. Timely capacity creation would go a long way towards comprehensive security through the length and breadth of the islands. Towards this ANC works in close co-ordination with the Andaman & Nicobar Administration.

Interacting with the media, the CINCAN Air Marshal PK Roy said, the Command will soon be inducting the latest version of Mi-17 Helicopters into the Andaman Nicobar Command. The induction ceremony is likely to be held soon at the country’s southernmost tip, Campbell Bay in the Great Nicobar Island, the CINCAN added.

Port Blair, Oct. 30: Andaman is all set to again host for the most happening international event in the islands, ‘MakeMyTrip Andaman marathon -2013’. The marathon is the third annual event in the series, starting in 2011 with a 10K and later upgrading it to two categories, the 10K and half marathon in 2012, thereby opening up participation for foreigners.

This year too, the event has been planned in a big way by the Andaman Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ACCI) in association with the Directorate of Sports, A&N Administration considering the success achieved during the last two years. The event scheduled to be held on 24th Nov. 2013 has included MakeMyTrip as the title sponsor while Actor Rahul Bose continues to be the brand ambassador.  

Addressing a press conference today at Hotel TSG Emerald View, Port Blair this evening, the Chairman of the Marathon Committee 2103 Shri Mohammed Jadwet explained that entries for participation has already started pouring in from foreign participants, much before the formal announcement is made. It’s a good sign said Mohammed, who expects the number of participants to increase further.

In 2011 when the maiden Andaman Marathon was launched, there were around 500 participants which had jumped to 870 the next year.

“We are expecting around 1000 participants this year including Indians and Foreigners, which is also the maximum limit as decided by the Committee”, said Shri G Bhasker, President ACCI.

Meanwhile, the Committee announced that the Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands, Lt. Gen. (Retd) AK Singh has agreed to flag off the Marathon from the National Memorial Cellular Jail and would be distributing the prizes to the winners. The Lt. Governor had also requested Actress Gul Panag for her participation, but due to her prior engagement she is not able to make it this year. Nevertheless she has assured her participation to the Lt. Governor in the next mega event scheduled in 2014.

As a star attraction, the Andaman Marathon 2013 would be graced by none other than the Flying Sikh of India, Milkha Singh who is expected as the guest of honour. The pride of India Milkha Singh had also agreed to visit the islands during last year’s marathon. Unfortunately due to health issues, he was not able to make it, said the Chairman Shri Jadwet.   

The Committee Chairman also took the opportunity to express gratitude to the Andaman & Nicobar Administration and to the Andaman Nicobar Command who have voluntarily agreed to support the mega event in all possible manner.

The Prize money continues to be the same like last year i.e. Rs. 1 Lakh as the first prize, Rs. 50,000/- and Rs. 30,000/- as the second and third prize respectively. The Committee is also planning to have special prizes for the senior category winners and for the first Indian.

The registration charges for this year has been fixed at Rs.500/- for the Half Marathon and Rs.300/- for the 10-K event and all registered participants will be provided with T-Shirt and running bib and on successful completion, certificates and medals would be distributed.  The registration is now open and can be done either online or forms can be availed at ACCI office and at the Netaji Stadium.
