Privatization will Result in Injustice to the Existing Workers: MP

Port Blair, Feb 11: The Member of Parliament, Shri Kuldeep Rai Sharma has raised the issue of privatization of Electricity Department of Andaman & Nicobar Administration in Parliament on 09/02/2021 under Rule 377. He said that the privatization will result in injustice to 3000 engineers, staff and workers of the Electricity Department who have ensured uninterrupted power supply even in tough circumstances like corona pandemic and tsunami.

The decision of Central Government to privatize the Electricity Department of Andaman & Nicobar Islands has caused great sense of resentment and agony to the employees of the Electricity Department and also to the entire Islanders. Power Generation in Andaman & Nicobar Islands is predominantly through Diesel due to which the cost of production of electricity is quite high.

Sharma stressed upon the fact that privatization will not only curtail jobs, pay less remuneration but will also enforce ‘hire and fire’ policy in engagement, thereby bringing uncertainty in employment in these Islands, which is already subjected to high rate of unemployment. He requested the Government to stop the privatization process of electricity department immediately to ensure justice for its employees.
