Port Blair, March 7: The Andaman & Nicobar AIDS Control Society (ANACS) in association with Red Ribbon Club (RRC) and National Service Scheme (NSS) of Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkiya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM) celebrated International Women's Day (IWD) on 7th March 2023 in the auditorium of JNRM.

Dr. Poonam Arora, Ex Chairperson A&N State Social Welfare Board was the Chief Guest. Dr. Arora, a woman from these islands, represented women of the country at international level at W20 Summit held at Indonesia in July 2022 along with 4 other India delegates. She is also the convener for ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’.

She motivated the students with her strong influential thoughts. It’s not just a day but all 365 days we should remember the sacrifice and contribution done by a woman for her loved ones and for the society. It’s time for us to work together, to build a more inclusive, just and prosperous world for women, girls, men, boys for everyone, everywhere.

Dr. Hemant Kumar Sharma, Principal JNRM appreciated the students for their active participation. Women empowerment is gaining momentum worldwide but still women continue to face discrimination and violence in every part of the world. International Women’s Day is a call to action.

Dr. Subrata Saha, Project Director, ANACS spoke on the theme of International Women’s Day 2023. This year’s theme is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”. It recognizes and celebrates the women who are championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education. We need to explore the impact of the digital gender gap on widening economic and social inequalities while focussing on the importance of protecting the rights of women in digital spaces and address online Information and communication technology-facilitated gender-based violence.

On this occasion, Group Dance competition was organized for the students of JNRM. 10 teams participated in the competition. Ms Rimpi Das and group bagged away the 1st position, Mr. Mohan Rao C.H and group stood 2nd and Ms. Vandana Kumari and group won 3rd position. The theme for the group dance competition was Women Empowerment and HIV & AIDS.

Prize and certificates were distributed to the participants by Dr. Subrata Saha, Project Director, ANACS. Balakrishna Nritya Academy also gave a dance performance with message on HIV & AIDS.

The Judges for the competition were Dr Priyanka Yadav, Assistant Professor, ANIIMS; Ms. Bincy. V. Kuruvilla, Tutor, School of Nursing and Dr. Jahanara Yasmeen, DD (IEC) ANACS.

Dr. Kandi Muthu, Assistant Professor, JNRM/ RRC Nodal Officer/ NSS Program Officer coordinated the program.

The function concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Shri Kaushik Kumar Halder.

International Women's Day is celebrated annually on 8th March as a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also recognizes the enormous obstacles they face, from structural injustices, marginalization, violence, discrimination, sexual abuse, deprived of basic and fundamental rights. It’s a call to take action to stand with women who are demanding their fundamental rights.
