CPI (M) Demands to Reconsider Decision to Convert Community Hall of New Pahargaon into Wellness Centre

Port Blair, March 10: CPI (M) has demanded to reconsider the decision to convert the Community Hall, New Pahargaon into UHC/Wellness Centre and allow the residents of the area to continue to utilize the Community Hall for community purpose.  In a letter sent to the Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Health), A & N Administration, D. Ayyappan, Secretary, CPI (M) A & N State Organising Committee said that on the request of residents of New Pahargaon area (Ward No. 20), he visited the said area on 9th March, 2023. He informed the Commissioner (Health) that residents of New Pahargaon (Ward No. 20) area are very much furious over the decision of the Administration to convert the Community Hall at New Pahargaon into Urban Health Centre/Wellness Centre.

CPI (M) Secretary told the Commissioner (Health) that the Community Hall was constructed in the year 2005 and maintained by the Port Blair Municipal Council and the same is being used by the residents of Ward No.20 numbering about 10,000 for conducting social/ community functions, marriages, engagements, birthday parties, etc. If the Community Hall is closed down or converted for any other purpose, the residents of the area will be facing difficulty to conduct such functions as the nearest other community hall is at Pathergudda.  

Ayyappan further stated in the letter that residents have informed him that the decision of the Administration to deny them of the existing facility of community hall reportedly had the approval of the Ward Councillor despite strong protest from the people. The residents have also informed the CPI (M) Secretary that they will oppose any move on the part of the authorities to convert the above Community Hall for any other purpose. 

Ayyappan further informed the Commissioner that sufficient government land is available about 300 mtrs away from the Community Hall which can be utilized for construction of Urban Health Centre/Wellness Centre.  CPI (M) asked the Administration to construct the Urban Health Centre/Wellness Centre at the vacant government land available in the locality.
