Port Blair, June 28: The Congress Leaders had recently visited Car Nicobar to understand the problems and grievances being faced by the communities out there. On behalf of the Tribal Communities, the ANTCC President Mr. Rangalal Halder has raised the issue for Construction of Retaining Wall at Mus Jetty areas of Car Nicobar Islands.

Addressing a letter to the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Halder said that Mus Jetty holds significant importance to the communities of Car Nicobar, serving as a crucial transport hub and a vital link to neighboring islands.

“A recent erosion and the constant threat of coastal flooding have significantly impacted the area, causing damage to the existing coconut plantation and posing risks to the surrounding roads”, said Halder.

He stated that the retaining wall would serve as an effective barrier against erosion, preserving the coconut plantation and ensuring the continued accessibility of the crucial road network. The construction of the retaining wall would provide long-term protection, reducing the maintenance costs associated with ongoing repairs and remediation, explained the ANTCC President.

He also clarified that a significant portion of the Mus jetty Area, stretching 1 kilometer in length and 50 meters in width has mysteriously vanished due to coastal erosion. This alarming occurrence has raised concerns about the island's ecological balance and the potential impact on local communities.
