Campbell bay, July 6: The Directorate of Disaster Management, A&N Administration in coordination with District Administration, Nicobar, Indian Coast Guard (A&N) and 4 Bn, National Disaster Response Force organized a 12 days Disaster Management Training from June 22 to July 6, 2023 at Community Hall, Campbell Bay for Community Volunteers (Aapda Mitras) of Great Nicobar under Up-scaling of Aapda Mitra Scheme. The scheme aims to train 300 Community Volunteers (Aapda Mitras) in A&N Islands.

During the concluding session, the chief guest, Shri Abhishek Gulia, Assistant Commissioner, Great Nicobar appreciated the dedicated participation of volunteers who have successfully completed the training and prepared themselves to fight against any disaster situation as first responders in the community level. He urged all participants to implement what they have learned during the training in their life for SAR Operations and CSSR in a calm manner for better response during hazardous situation and coordinate from community level of their respective district and to the State. He said, a trained and prepared mind will only save lives professionally and effectively.

Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh, Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad, South Andaman who also attended the concluding session of the training programme highlighted on scheme of Government of India ‘Up-scaling Aapda Mitra Scheme' which will be funded from Preparedness and Capacity Building Funding Window of National Disaster Response Fund. The scheme will be implemented by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in partnership with State/UT Governments and State Disaster Management Authorities. The scheme focuses on training of 1,00,000 community volunteers in 350 highly vulnerable districts prone to flood, landslide, cyclone and earthquake in India by March 2024, he said.

On the occasion, the guest of honour, Shri Brij Mohan Meena, Dy. Superintendent of Police, Great Nicobar highlighted the importance of disaster management trainings for the community volunteers for responding to their community's immediate needs during and in the aftermath of a disaster.

The Commanding Officer, Shri J S Randhawa, Indian Coast Guard (A&N), Campbell Bay elaborated on the importance of Disaster Management Training which was imparted to Community Volunteers as per the syllabus prescribed by the National Disaster Management Authority, GoI, MHA, New Delhi on basics of disaster management, vulnerability, various risks, search & rescue, medical first response and improvising rescue equipment from the locally available resources.

Shri Janik Ram, Asst. Director (Admn.) expressed gratitude to all esteemed guests and dignitaries, Officers of Administration, Indian Coast Guard (A&N) and PRIs who were present in the occasion. He further, appreciated the participation and cooperation of all for the successful completion of this Disaster Management Training which were imparted to Community Volunteer to build better capacity and their skill towards disaster preparedness and capacity building.

The Course Completion Certificate alongwith Identity Cards were distributed to the trained Community Volunteers (Aapda Mitra) on the occasion.
