Port Blair, July 27: The wooden foot bridge across Kalighat Creek (Nishchintapur village) collapsed on 22nd July 2023 due to heavy flow of water in the creek and taking up this issue with the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration, the Member of Parliament Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma demanded urgent repair of the wooden foot bridge and Construction of RCC Bridge Across Kalighat Creek (Nishchintapur village).

This incident has disrupted the communication network of the Nishchintapur village, leading to severe inconveniences for the residents.

He pointed out that this is not the first time when such an incident has occurred; the wooden footbridge has collapsed on several occasions during previous years of heavy flow in the creek and has subsequently been rebuilt.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary the Member of Parliament mentioned that the collapse of the footbridge has had a profound impact on the lives of the residents of the Nishchintapur village. The bridge served as the only means of fast transportation to Kalighat, where people have daily needs outside the village.

He added that this recurring issue has caused immense hardship for the residents and has become a matter of grave concern.

In light of this serious situation, he requested to take immediate action and steps to repair the wooden footbridge as soon as possible. Restoring the footbridge will re-establish communication between the remote villages, bringing much-needed relief to the affected people, he said.

Considering the recurring nature of this problem, he also requested to explore the possibilities of constructing a Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) bridge across Kalighat Creek towards Nischintapur village, which is a long pending demand of people of the area. An RCC bridge would provide a permanent solution to this persistent issue and ensure the safety and convenience of the residents, he added.
