Member of Parliament Demands for Procurement of New Operational Headring Machine for Chatham Saw Mill
Port Blair, July 28: The Member of Parliament, Shri. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands to procure a new Operational Headring Machine for Chatham Saw Mill.
In a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor, the Member of Parliament said that presently, out of the two Headring Machines for slicing logs, the 54" Vertical Saw Band machine installed in 1974, has been dismantled due to ageing and malfunctioning.
Consequently, the Mill is left with only the 72" Vertical Saw Band machine, which was installed in 1984 and is now nearing its 40th year of service.
He added that the lone operational Headring Machine has served beyond its intended lifespan and is prone to major breakdowns. Given the significance of Chatham Saw Mill, not only as one of the oldest sawmills but also due to its immense historical value, it attracts a large number of tourists daily.
Furthermore, the saw mill plays a vital role as a major source of timber for the people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, contributing to the local economy and maintaining affordable prices for timber, he said.
The Member of Parliament pointed out that in the unfortunate event of the Saw Mill becoming non-operational due to possible breakdown of the old 72" Vertical Saw Band machine, it would result in a major setback for the entire region. It will also have a negative impact on the revenue generated for the Government by the Saw Mill.
To safeguard the interests of our people and preserve this valuable asset, the Member of Parliament requested the Hon’ble Lt. Governor to procure a new operational Headring Machine. This acquisition would not only enhance productivity but also serve as a standby in case of any unforeseen issues with the existing machine, he added.
