Car Nicobar, Aug. 2: As a part of DC Cup- 2023 – a mini Olympic format year-long sports event, the second major tournament – DC Cup Football Rolling Trophy is being organised by the District Administration in collaboration with NGSA (Nicobar Games and Sports Association) at BJR Stadium, Tamaloo, Car Nicobar. A total of 17 teams, including 13 villages, Education Department and Indian Air Force are participating in the 3 weeks long tournament.

Shri. Hari Kallikkat, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Nicobar District graced the inaugural ceremony on Aug 1, 2023 as the chief guest in a fully packed stadium where more than 500 villagers were present to witness the ceremony. Superintendent of Police, Nicobar District, Shri Manjeet Sheoran IPS, and Chairman Tribal Council, Car Nicobar, Shri. Lionel Nicomede were the Guests of Honour.

While addressing the gathering, the chief guest emphasized the importance of sports and motivated the sportsmen to use this format to enhance their skill in the game and to rise to higher levels in sports.  

The guests of honours urged the players to play with true sportsmen spirit and bring out the best of their performances. A cultural program was performed by the students of GPS, Kinyuka and GSSS Malacca Village. The ceremony was witnessed by the HoDs of all the Department, villagers and youth of Car Nicobar.

The inaugural match between Kinyuka village and Chuckchucha village was held after the flag hoisting ceremony and declaration of opening of the tournament by the chief guest. This is an important step to revive the sport and motivate youth to play for higher levels in future. Car Nicobar has a great history in the sport which has produced international and national footballers from the Island, this event is a big step forward in this regard.
